Getting started
Librevet Ortho is a veterinary radiograph viewer and orthopaedic surgical planning tool. It supports TPLO planning, fracture repair planning, implant templating at true scale, and standard radiographic measurement.
What does Librevet Ortho do?
- View and annotate digital radiographs
- Calibrate using a known-size reference (typically a radiopaque sphere)
- Measure distances, angles, TPA, CORA and Norberg angles
- Overlay implant templates drawn to true millimetre dimensions
- Plan straight, wedge and crescentic osteotomies, and reposition bone
- Send a case to a referring vet as a read-only link, or name a colleague who can work on it with you
- Ask a board-certified specialist for a paid remote opinion
Who is it for?
Small animal surgeons and clinicians doing orthopaedic surgical planning. The app assumes clinical knowledge — it doesn’t teach you when to perform a TPLO, just helps you plan one accurately.
What do I do first?
- Start from an image. From the gallery, click New Case and drop in a radiograph, a zipped study, or a clinical video — or pull a study straight off your PACS. There is no empty case: every case begins with imaging.
- Name it. DICOM files are read by the app directly — you don’t have to export a JPEG first — and JPEG, PNG and a zipped study all work too. Name the case once the first image is in, and organise into folders whenever you like.
- Calibrate. Most other tools won’t unlock until you’ve set a real-world scale. See Calibrating radiographs.
- Measure or plan. Once calibrated, the sidebar sections (Calibration, Measurement, Osteotomy, Reposition, Annotation) and the Implants tab become active.
What is on the screen?
- Left sidebar — two tabs: Tools (the five planning sections) and Implants (the template library). A third, Chart, appears only on dental films.
- Centre canvas — the radiograph workspace. Each open view carries its own toolbar for rotating, mirroring, windowing and inverting the film.
- Top bar — undo/redo, attachments, sharing, view settings
- Bottom-left of the films — the swap panel, when a placed implant is selected: its name, swap controls, and delete. Drag it by its header, or put it in the sidebar’s Implants tab instead
- Bottom-right — help, bug reports, feature requests
Key concepts
- Calibration is per-radiograph. Each image needs its own scale set, because every exposure has different magnification.
- The “active” radiograph has a cyan border. With multiple views open, tools act only on the active one — click a panel to make it active.
- Templates are drawn to true mm dimensions. A 3.5 mm plate is drawn at 3.5 mm against the scale you calibrated — so the fit you see is only as good as that calibration.
- Placed implants are anchored to the bone, not to the screen. If you later rotate the radiograph to view from a different angle, the implant rotates with it.
